There is a saying. "Half of the elite gathered in Tsinghua, Tsinghua half English in Yao class" 。 How strong is Yao class? What kind of story does it have behind it? The author will help you uncover the mystery.

Legendary Yao Ban

John Hopcroft, a Turing prize winner, once said of Yao class: "Yao class has the best undergraduate and best undergraduate education in the world". (John Hopcroft)

In the 2018 global university rankings, Tsinghua Yao class replaced MIT as the champion of Computer Science in the world. Yao ban, also known as the "computer science experimental class of Tsinghua University", was founded in 2005. Its original intention was to screen and train the top computer talents in China.

Due to the extremely high threshold of Yao class, only more than 400 students have been enrolled in the 15 years since its establishment.

Despite the limited number of students, their achievements are quite remarkable.

The first person in computer programming in China, known as the first student of computer programming in the CEOI and ACM circles, is known to everyone. He was admitted to Tsinghua University in 2004, and entered Ph.D. in Yao class in 2008. During this period, he won the Google global programming challenge champion, the first Hangzhou ACM/ICPC division and the second finals in the ACM-ICPC world finals. After graduation, he entered Google headquarters. Later, he was invited by Baidu group to participate in the research and development of the unmanned vehicle technology. Now he started his own business, and founded an automatic driving start-up company named Xiao Ma Zhihang, valued at more than 3 billion dollars.

Besides, we are familiar with the "face recognition technology". The team members who provided the technology for Alipay are Ying Qi, Tang Wenbin and Yang Mu. They are all young talents who graduated from Yao class. Several people jointly founded "open vision technology". The accuracy rate of face recognition can reach 97.27%.

These are just the tip of the iceberg for the achievements of the Yao class. According to statistics, the Yao class students have published 138 papers in internationally renowned periodicals, and 49 students have been selected to participate in international academic conferences and make lectures. Nearly 1/3 students have achieved scientific research, which is very rare even in first-class universities abroad.

What is Yao Yao's Yao?

Looking at these, you can't help asking "Yao" is obviously a personal surname in the two words of Yao class. This class must be closely related to this person. So where is the name of Yao? In fact, Yao is the founder of Yao Qizhi in Yao class.

Yao Qizhi, official website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

In 2005, the software science experimental class, led by Yao Qizhi and cooperating with Microsoft Asia Research Institute, was established at Tsinghua University. Yao Qizhi personally participated in the formulation and improvement of the training program and teaching plan of the experimental class. In March 2006, Yao Qizhi wrote to a student in Tsinghua School: "our goal is not to train excellent computer software programmers, but to train world-class computer talents."

In addition to establishing the direction of development, Yao Qizhi also went to the podium, and he taught himself many core courses.

Under the invitation of Yao Chi Chi, many top computer scholars who had won Turing and Godel prizes came to his class to give lectures to students. At the same time, Yao's students often had the opportunity to exchange and study abroad.

In order to better cultivate the top notch innovative talents in computer science, Yao Qizhi renamed the "software science experiment class" in April 2009 as "computer science experimental class", because he paid the class's painstaking efforts, and the class was also known as "Yao Ban" by Tsinghua teachers and students.

The only Chinese American Turing Award winner.

Yao Qizhi, who was born in Xiaogan, Hubei, was born in Shanghai in December 24, 1946. She went to Taiwan with her parents in her childhood. In 1967, she received a bachelor's degree in physics from National Taiwan University. After completing military service, she flew to the Harvard University to study for a doctorate.

At Harvard, Yao Qizhi met a female student from China, Chu Feng, who later became a lifelong companion to Yao Qizhi. Chu Feng studied computers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A meeting of two people opened up a gateway to the computer world for Yao Qizhi. He suddenly discovered that computer science was his interest. So in 1973, he chose to go to University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign to learn the computer which was not popular at that time, and obtained the computer science of University of Illinois after two years. After graduation, he went to famous American universities such as MIT and Stanford University for teaching and theoretical research.

Yao Qizhi's research directions include computational theory and its application in cryptography and quantum computation. In 1993, he first proposed the complexity of quantum communication, and basically completed the theoretical foundation of quantum computers. In 1995, the distributed quantum computing model was put forward, which became the foundation of the security of distributed quantum algorithm and quantum communication protocol. In view of its outstanding contributions to the computation theory of pseudo-random number generation, cryptography and communication complexity, the American Computer Society (ACM) awarded Yao's 2000 year Turing prize to Yao Chi Chi. Yao Qizhi became the first Asian scientist to win Turing Award, and so far is the only Chinese American prize winner.

Sell property and fly back to China

In 1998, Yao Qizhi was elected academician of the American Academy of Sciences.

In 2000, Yao Qizhi was elected academician of the American Academy of science and art. In 2002, he went to Shanghai, Nanjing and Beijing to communicate with scholars in the field of computer science, and found that Tsinghua computer department graduate students were excellent. In 2004, Yao Qizhi received Mr. Chen Ning Yang's invitation to return to Tsinghua for his teaching.

Yao Qizhi, who is well developed in the United States, can obviously stay in the United States after retirement. However, to everyone's surprise, the 58 year old Yao Qizhi decided to "return to the roots". He resolutely resigned from the tenure of Princeton University, sold his house in the United States, took his wife back to the motherland, and formally joined the Tsinghua University higher research center as a full-time professor. 。 He regarded this decision as "the most meaningful thing in life".

In 2005, Yao Qizhi was appointed professor of Bowen lecture at Chinese University Hong Kong. In the same year, the Microsoft laboratory Chinese University Hong Kong group computing and Interface Technology Joint Laboratory, established by Microsoft Asia Research Institute and Chinese University Hong Kong, was established in Chinese University Hong Kong. Yao Qizhi served as the chairman of the International Advisory Committee of the joint laboratory. Yao Qizhi was personally involved in teaching.

In 2007, Yao Qizhi founded the theoretical computer science and Communication Science Institute of Chinese University Hong Kong, and led the establishment of the theoretical computer science research center of Tsinghua University.

In June 2010, Tsinghua University - Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Chinese University Hong Kong theoretical computer science research center was established, Yao Qi Zhi served as the director. In 2010, Yao Chi Chi promoted the Institute of cross information research, Tsinghua University, and served as Dean of the University, focusing on cross disciplinary research in Information Science and other disciplines, especially in physics, mathematics and life sciences.

In 2019, the intelligence class of Tsinghua University was announced. Yao Qizhi was the chief Professor, and he designed the teaching plan of each course himself.

Has anyone ever asked Yao Qizhi if he regretted such a life?

Without hesitation, he replied, "if I hadn't gone this way, I would have regretted it."

For these efforts, Yao Qizhi said: "Wherever we live, people who grow up in Chinese culture will never forget that they are descendants of the Chinese people. The ability to train world-class computer talents for the country can make some breakthroughs in cutting-edge technology in the motherland. The meaning is totally different.

He gave up his American membership and sold his products to China. He worked hard to cultivate talented people, only to be strong for the motherland.
